What are breathing exercises?
You have been provided with breathing for speech exercises as you have been assessed as having reduced breath to support the voice. This may mean that you have a quiet, breathy, rushed or harsh voice. This does not necessarily mean that you have a lung condition; it may mean that your body has learned to use less breath to support speaking. Before starting the following exercises, ensure that you are comfortable, either lying down or sitting up. If you are sitting up, push your feet backwards and under the chair. Remember not to slouch. Place your hand on your lower tummy and the other hand on your rib cage. Blow all of the air out of your lungs slowly

Breathing exercises will initially focus on teaching individuals how to control their breathing. Controlled breathing may then be used with voice exercises e.g. sustaining an ‘ahhh’ sound. The therapist will then introduce using breathing with speech sounds, syllables, sentences, paragraphs and conversation.
Other breathing exercises may include compensatory strategies for individuals who tire easily when speaking. Exercises may focus on teaching the individual to slow down their pace of speech and inserting pauses where necessary.
Deep breathing exercises may also be practised with individuals who stutter.

These exercises will help you to improve your breathing technique. • Ensure you are as relaxed as possible before starting your breathing exercises. • Always take your breathing exercises gently, pausing between sections. If you start to feel dizzy, rest for a minute or two and then try again. • Allow yourself enough time to complete the exercises so that you do not rush them.
